About
The FITNESS project aims to advance active power distribution networks in Europe by training a new generation of researchers in the field. The project tackles the operational complexities and cybersecurity risks of modern power distribution networks, which are transitioning from passive systems to active ones with new requirements in market models, coordination between transmission and distribution operators, and decentralized control mechanisms.
Key objectives of FITNESS include:
01/ Training and Career Opportunities for Ph.D. Candidates
Thirteen Ph.D. students will receive interdisciplinary training to develop skills in power distribution network technology and emerging energy market models, enhancing their career potential in academia, industry, and services.
02/ Development of New Market Models
FITNESS will design market models for active distribution networks that address renewable energy sources, demand response, electric vehicles, and tariff models for consumers, aiming for efficient energy exchange.
03/ Improved TSO-DSO Coordination
The project will create strategies for enhanced interaction between transmission system operators (TSOs) and distribution system operators (DSOs), improving energy market efficiency and reliability.
04/ Decentralized Operation Management
FITNESS will support the shift to decentralized network management with multi-level decision models for adaptive network control, aiming to improve efficiency and reduce costs.
05/ Voltage Management
The project focuses on strategies to manage network voltage under disturbances and cyber threats using advanced technologies like edge computing and stochastic optimization.
06/ Integration of Computing, Communication, and Control
FITNESS will develop new protocols and platforms for merging information and communications technology (ICT) with control systems, enhancing operational efficiency.
07/ Dissemination and Knowledge Transfer
FITNESS will actively share findings through publications, workshops, and conferences, increasing awareness of decentralized distribution network challenges and strengthening the impact of its research.
Each Ph.D. candidate will conduct individual research aligned with these goals, working closely with experienced supervisors in both academic and industry settings. This collaborative effort, including hands-on projects and real-world applications, is designed to shape a knowledgeable workforce ready for Europe’s net-zero energy transition. Through FITNESS, Europe aims to set a global example for innovative, sustainable, and resilient power distribution systems.
