The Technical University of Denmark (DTU) leads in technical and natural sciences, with initiatives in engineering fields like sustainable energy technology and life science. With 13,400 students and 6,000 staff, it emphasizes education, research, consulting, and innovation to create societal value. Research drives the university’s work, fostering collaboration and global partnerships. Its focus areas include digitalization, sustainable energy, and life science, addressing societal needs and pushing the boundaries of what is possible. Technology development arises from the synergy between research, education, and scientific advice, led by researchers at the forefront of innovation.
The overall objectives of department of Wind and Energy Systems (DTU Wind) are to maintain and further develop Denmark as a leading
knowledge and development center for wind energy and to support and develop the renewable energy sector through research, innovation, education and research-based consultancy. The department research spans the full spectrum of wind and energy systems. From investigating nanoscale structures to macro-scale atmospheric flow; from designing the turbines of tomorrow to the digital energy solutions of the future; from developing electric power systems to exploring more democratic processes for project planning. The DTU Wind organizational set-up reflects the new role of wind power in the energy systems as well as the continued need for development of new wind turbine technology and materials and components research. DTU Wind has more than 372 staff members of which 68% are researchers, 15 professors, 105 PhDs, 24% women, 39 nationalities.
Key persons
Key research facilities, infrastructure and equipment
Risø Hybrid Power Plant Facility: The Risø HPP is a DTU and TotalEnergies jointly developed facility – integrated to existing DTU test facilities at the Risø campus. Phase I is focused on AC-connected electrical hybrid power plants with wind turbines, solar PV, battery storage and generation/load emulation capabilities.
PowerLabDK Facilities: World-class experimental platform for technology development, testing, demonstration and training within electric power and energy. PowerLabDK includes a number of state-of-the-art facilities linked through communication systems, SCADA-solutions etc. across four locations. The facilities are capable of testing and demonstration according to a variety of international standards, including IEC, CENELEC, IEEE and others.
All the research facilities at the department can be found here.
Status of research premises
All research facilities are owned by DTU and wholly independent from other beneficiaries and associated partners in the consortium.
